The Concept2 RowErg is the machine most coaches point to when someone asks which rower to buy, and it has earned that reputation through decades of consistency. A spinning flywheel inside a wire cage provides air resistance that scales directly with how hard you pull, so there is no artificial cap on output and the stroke feels honest at every effort level. The damper lever lets you change the airflow into the cage, which alters the feel of the catch rather than making the workout objectively easier. Pulls register on the PM5 monitor, a self-powered computer that tracks pace, watts, calories, distance and stroke rate, and connects over Bluetooth and ANT+ to apps and heart-rate straps. The frame separates into two pieces for storage and rolls on caster wheels, though it is long and benefits from a dedicated spot. The seat sits 14 inches off the floor, which most users find easy to get on and off. It is not the quietest option because of the rushing-air sound, and the styling is utilitarian, but the durability and resale value are exceptional. For data-driven training and serious conditioning, it remains the standard others are measured against.
